Sports Bras 101

Ladies, finding the perfect sports bra is just as important to your workout as your warm-up. The perfect sports bra will allow you to move, stretch, and sweat all while providing as much support as your closest girlfriend!

Let's take a look at the three basic "levels" of sports bras: Low, Medium, and High Impact.

--

LOW IMPACT

What do I wear them for?
Think yoga, a gentle pilates class, or even strength training. "Low Impact" doesn't mean the workout is easy, it just means there isn't a lot of harsh up and down movement that would cause "bounce" in the bust.

What do I need?
For low impact workouts, you're going to want something really comfortable with a lot of stretch and some light compression that makes you feel supported and covered.

The new sport style from CoziGirl is a perfect low-impact sports bra with plenty of stretch and a soft, breathable fabric. Its over-the-head styling allows for no-fuss dressing and its lightly padded cups offer just the right amount of compression and support.

What do I wear them for?
Medium impact sports bras are great for workouts like power walking, cycling, or ellipticals — any type of movement that causes a medium level of "bounce." Women with larger busts may find them more comfortable for walking as well.

What do I need?
More movement calls for a more supportive bra — one with a sturdier fabric, more compression, and a good snug fit. You'll likely want something that clasps in the back for a more customized fit that will offer even more support.

This wireless sports bra from Anita is a perfect next-step-up from a low impact bra. The seams and stronger fabric provide extra support for a more intense workout, while the moisture-wicking fabric ensures you'll stay comfortable as you move.

High Impact

What do I wear them for?
Think running, aerobics, or high movement sports like tennis or kickboxing. High impact bras will provide the most support for activities with a lot of "bounce."

What do I need?
For activities with a lot of up and down, you're going to want maximum coverage and support with sturdy fabrics and structured cups. You may want to consider a wired sports bra that will help keep your bust encapsulated and securely in place.

This sports bra from Elomi features a padded underwire for comfort and support, as well as highly structured cups to keep everything exactly where you want it. Gone are the days of doubling up on bras to get the support and compression you need!

Of course, this guide is by no means a RULE book. You can wear high impact sports bras for yoga, and a medium impact bra may be all the support you need for running.

Whatever your size and workout needs, your Allure fit specialist will talk with you and assist you in finding the perfect sports bra for you.

Here are a few quick fit tips you can do on your own to test your sports bra in the fitting room:

- Run in place, do some jumping jacks, or just hop up and down a few times. Some movement in the bust is to be expected, but see how much movement you're getting and if that's comfortable for you.

- Check for poking, prodding, or chafing. If it bugs you in the fitting room, it's definitely going to bother you while you're working out. Talk to your fit specialist about any discomfort you're feeling, and she will help you make adjustments.

- Can you breathe? A new sports bra might be tighter than you're used to, but you still need to breathe! Take a deep breath in, let your chest expand, and see how that feels.
